World Cultures

Welcome - Bienvenidos - to PCS World Cultures!

World Cultures is a new Exploratory course this year. The course is designed to teach students about the language and culture of different countries around the world. This year, we are focusing on Spanish-speaking countries (including Spain, Mexico, and Puerto Rico), and will learn some conversational Spanish!

Why should my child learn a foreign language?

Young students who study world languages develop a a deeper understanding of language and culture and a global awarenessthat is essential to their future success. They also gain important communication skills that will be useful in handling any foreign situation with ease.

Why learn Spanish?

- Spanish is spoken by over 400 million people around the world. It is the official language of 21 countries.

- Students who study a foreign language for at least two years generally earn higher verbal scores on the SAT/ACT. Learning a second language increases students' understanding of their first language!

- Learning Spanish will give your child a head-start in learning other languages. Once your brain creates connections between two languages, it is easier to make those same connections to other new languages.

- Spanish is becoming more useful throughout the U.S. due to the growing Hispanic and Latino population. Spanish is spoken by over 37 million people in the U.S. alone!

How can I help my child?

You don't have to know Spanish to help your child learn! Encourage your student to study the vocab a few minutes each night; participate in homework assignments (listening and looking for Spanish all around you); remind your child to do his or her best both in and out of class; and be an enthusiastic supporter of your child's world language learning!
